Coogee Lanterns

Winter Solstice

↓

The Coogee Lanterns Winter Solstice project is a community-based arts project that provides an opportunity for the local community to learn creative skills by offering facilitated workshops on paper lantern making.

We aim to provide a space where residents and local artists can come together, share and develop new creative skills and produce their own unique paper lanterns.

Lantern making is an old craft that is ideal for bringing the community together through creativity. It’s an inclusive activity that provides an easy-to-follow framework where participants can create their own designs. Collectively, the gathering of lanterns will be displayed as a beautiful light parade/installation that we believe will create a sense of awe in the broader community.

Lantern Making Workshops

The art of sculptural paper lantern-making provides a platform for creation and experimentation in which artists, makers, and enthusiasts can create a variety of forms and themes, from small lanterns to large-scale light installations.

Workshops are open to all ages and skills. We will encourage skilled participants to push their designs while teaching the basics to those who are not familiar with the art of making.

Workshop details: This is a 90-minute workshop. No experience is necessary; we’ll provide guidance and the materials you need to create your own paper lantern.

Winter Solstice Parade
Come join us to display your lantern as the sun sets for a walk along Coogee Beach on the evening of the Winter Solstice. It is a time to reflect on the seasons that have passed and the seasons to come and celebrate the coming of spring. Lighting lanterns on the night of the Winter Solstice represent warmth and hope during the longest night of the year.
